Hmmm. Two Jerry Band shows in a 9 day period. I guess you could say I am an extremist when it comes to the music I love. My high school pal Dan accompanied me to this one. We took the Amtrak from Essex,VT to Penn Station in NYC. And Dan's brother let us stay overnight at his apartment.
I found out at this show that the NYPD takes public drinking pretty seriously. About 3 separate times an officer told me to throw my beer away outside Madison Square Garden. But I was a bit of an idiot back then,so I just kept buying more and more beer each time. Taking a hint was not my strong point.
Into the show we went. My seat was WAY up in the bleachers. (Tower A/Gate 90) Dan had a similar seat in a nearby section. This show featured David Murray sitting in on saxophone throughout the whole show. I thought it was Branford Marsalis at the time, but it was indeed Mr. Murray.
The Garden is not the best place to see a concert. It is cavernous, and the sound quality is so-so depending on where you sit. High points of the show were Sam Cooke's "Wonderful World" and Chuck Berry's "You Never Can Tell". Plus a nice, long "Lay Down Sally" to end the 1st set. Just like in Albany Jerry opened the 2nd set with a 20+ minute "Shining Star". Later in the set were meaty versions of "Don't Let Go" and "Tangled Up in Blue".
This is (so far) the only time I've been in the mighty Garden, and it was a most enjoyable night.
