A trainwreck. That's how most of this show turned out. Tons of people without tickets knocked over the gates. It was a hot, muggy day, and I responded by drinking wine and wearing all black clothes. For this reason I experienced real dehydration for the first time.
And that wasn't even the show. To be fair,it wasn't all bad. Bob Dylan opened the show and played extremely well. His voice sounded good, and he had a great band.
Then the Dead came out and started with "Touch of Grey". Jerry Garcia looked pretty bad on the video screen. His skin looked grey and unhealthy. Oh boy. If the 1994 show was a bit uneven, things were not looking better for this show. Frustratingly, the rest of the band played well, but Jerry seemed unconnected and musically lazy and boring. These were rough times for one of my favorite guitarists. His drug problem had seemingly grown since last year's show. He was also forgetting lyrics to songs he'd been playing for years. On a positive note, the "Drums and Space" segment was a lot of fun. It's just sad to say that THIS was my last time seeing The Boys in person.
